As of this posting, this file is the largest resolution, single-file height map of the earth that exists anywhere online.

Previously, the largest single-file height map for the earth that existed online was the 8bit height map provided by NASA at https://www.visibleearth.nasa.gov/images/73934/topography

That file is only 21,600px across which means every pixel represents 1.15 square miles /  1.85 square km at the equator, and it's only 8bits which means every shade of gray represents chunks of about 113ft / 34.5m in elevation. It also doesn't reveal the topography of Antarctica or Greenland.

This height map is 65,536px square and 16bits, which means each pixel at the equator represents .61 square km / .24 square mi, and each shade of gray represents about .14m in elevation. The only other difference apart from being substantially more detailed than the NASA map is that this map is Mercator instead of Equirectangular.  Note that despite the thumbnail showing snow cover on Antarctica and Greenland, the full resolution download actually has the land topography.
